Kathy Jo Suhr

Alma’s House of Flowers, Middletown

$35,000 loan

Kathy Jo SuhrA

TER WRITING A REPORT ON HORTICULTURE IN SIXTH GRADE, Kathy Jo Suhr knew floral design was what she wanted to do with her life. Following high school, she attended a private school in Pittsburgh for floral design and was then hired by Alma’s House of Flowers, in Middletown, PA. When the owner decided to sell in 1999, Kathy purchased the shop keeping the same name to the long time Middletown staple. Kathy first came to Community First Fund in 2004 for business advice but soon discovered the organizations comprehensive services and that same year received a loan.

These days Alma’s House of Flowers is known for unique, high-style, contemporary, not run-of-the-mill design. Shipments of flowers come in almost everyday from places such as South Africa, The Netherlands, Spain, Australia, and across the U.S. and Canada. Kathy enjoys the flexibility of small business ownership and takes pride in her work. The business varies from corporate accounts to weddings where Kathy takes pleasure in creating the environment for each bride’s special day.
